Sewer overflowing through a manhole
Does a coupled model exchange the right flow between sewer and street?
Rubinato (2017)
Version 0.1.0
- Right answer
- Laboratory or field measurements · Rubinato (2017)
- Results
- No model run yet · see them ↓
- Must
- match the measured exchange flow
What happens
A laboratory rig where water surges up a manhole onto a surface and drains back.
Why it matters
Urban flooding happens where sewers and streets exchange water. The coupling equations are the weakest link of most models.
A good model must
- match the measured exchange flow
- get the surface depth peak within 5 %
How models did
No model has been scored on this test yet.
Status of this test
Draft. To become candidate it needs: data licence verified; all inputs available; reference (truth) available.

Checks and why each limit was chosen
| Check | Difference measured as a percentage of | Latest | Difference | Why this check |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| exchange_Q NSE of Q · skill score, beside the score | not a percentage: reported as the NSE (1 is perfect) | – | NSE on manhole exchange discharge ≥ 0.7 vs laboratory. | |
| surface_h peak_error of h · in the score | already a percentage | – | Surface depth peak within 5% of lab gauges. |

About this test
Physics
Coupled 1D sewer / 2D surface exchange through a manhole under steady and unsteady surcharge. Exchange discharge depends on head difference and orifice / weir regimes.
