OpenSWMM 6 finite volume

OpenSWMM Engine v6 with its new explicit finite-volume routing (FLOW_ROUTING FV): one cell per conduit on the channel tests, its default cells per pipe on the drainage networks.

Production software, installed from its official source and run by the suite with its defaults, except the settings each card names. Rank #3 on the leaderboard, OpenHydro rating 876 (95 % interval 672 to 1052) over 13 tests; median difference 0.19 %. Score cards from: OpenSWMM Engine v6 finite volume (6.0.0a4.dev1).

Sewer pipes running part full
A1D-001
#5 1.4 % off
of 5 models
• Worst depth error 1.4 cm off; • Typical flow error < 0.0001 % off

Accurate mid-line (under 2 mm), but up to 1.4 cm too deep in the pipes next to the normal-depth outfalls and 7 mm too deep in the first pipes below the inflows. EPA SWMM 5.2.4 holds normal depth to 0.3 mm everywhere.

Sewer pipes running full
A1D-002
#5 23 % off
of 5 models
• Worst depth error 28 cm off; • Typical flow error < 0.0001 % off

The pipes are surcharged and the finite-volume routing overestimates the friction loss: the hydraulic grade line falls 1.42 m over the five pipes instead of 1.19 m (19 % more), so the upstream manholes stand up to 28 cm too high. Dynamic wave in the same engine is 0.4 mm from exact.

Backwater up a sewer
A1D-005
#5 0.31 % off
of 5 models
• Worst depth error 3.7 mm off; • Typical flow error < 0.0001 % off

3.7 mm. With one cell per pipe (FV_MIN_CELLS 1, as on the channel tests) it is 2.2 cm off; the default subdivides each pipe.

Gentle backwater in a channel
A1F-001
#12 0.049 % off
of 15 models
• Average depth error 0.44 mm off; · Water conserved 0.049 % error

0.4 mm off. Its convergence rate fitted through the four grids is 0.79 (90 % range 0.73 to 0.85); dynamic wave reaches 1.8.

Dam break onto dry ground
A1F-010
#4= 0.88 % off
of 20 models
• Flood front 3.33 m behind exact; · Water conserved 0.003 % error

3.3 m behind the exact front, where dynamic wave is 41 m behind, and it conserves water. The error shrinks at a rate of 0.66 (90 % range 0.54 to 0.77), below the design order of 1.

Dam break into shallow water
A1F-011
#5= 0.18 % off
of 20 models
• Average depth error 0.99 mm off; · Water conserved 0.016 % error

OpenSWMM 6's new finite-volume routing is 1 mm from the exact answer where SWMM's dynamic wave is 37 mm off. Its convergence rate is 0.87 (90 % range 0.79 to 0.95), close to the design order of 1.
